If you’re a cat owner you may be familiar with this pretty grass as a living treat for your pet. It’s safe for animals to eat and cats especially love it, hence the name.
But what you may not have thought of, is how beautiful this grass looks in a planter as an indoor houseplant!
No Cat Required
So, even if you’re not a cat owner, you can grow cat grass for decorative purposes. Its bright green color and thick blades make a beautiful looking indoor houseplant.
Where will cat grass grow?
You can grow cat grass indoors or outdoors. It enjoys light but it grows well in low light as well.
For reference, I have a planter of cat grass in our bathroom which gets just a small amount of light let in when we leave the door open. It grows great in there! Its lush and green and if anything, I don’t have to trim it much.
Cat grass also grows great in full sun so you can literally put it anywhere and you should not have a problem growing it.
Some idea for where to put your decorative cat grass in your house: In the bathroom on the back of the toilet as you can see I did, as a centerpiece on your dining room table, in a smaller container on your coffee table, nightstand, bathroom counter, kitchen counter, window sill, book shelf, or end table. Literally anywhere and you can plant it in anything. Even a coffee mug!
You could even use cat grass as centerpieces for wedding, bridal showers, baby showers or birthday parties. Maybe a golf themed birthday? How cute would that be? Or an Easter tablescape?
Since can grass starts to sprout in just a couple of days and grows fast, you have so many options. The possibilities are truly endless.
Do you need to “mow” your cat grass?
Yes. You do actually. Just like regular grass, cat grass looks best when its kept manicured. Simply trim off the tops with scissors to your desired length. It will keep growing, so you’ll have to give your cat grass a haircut regularly.
Watering your cat grass
Water your cat grass 2-3 times per week or as needed to keep soil slightly moist.
Too damp and you could get mildew/mold. Too dry and your grass may start to turn brown.
You may notice dew on your cat grass.
Just like grass outside, you can get dew drops on your cat grass! This is a fun little surprise that adds to the character of this pretty, living grass, making it a real treat to use for decorative purposes.
What exactly is “cat grass” anyway?
Cat grass is typically grown from oat or barley seeds so its non-toxic to animals. If you’re planning on feeding this to your animals, just make sure the seeds you buy are marked safe for animal consumption.
This article is focused on using cat grass for decorative purposes but if you do have pets, you may want to consider this in case they decide to take a nibble from your decorative planter of grass.
Cat grass is extremely easy to grow.
All you need is a planter, soil, rocks for drainage, some water and cat grass seeds.
You can also grow cat grass without soil.
How to Grow Cat Grass Indoors
To set up your cat grass, first choose a planter. You have a few options here:
With soil. Use a planter of your choosing. Use one you have or you can shop planters on Amazon. Then add a layer of rocks, then soil.
Without soil. If you prefer to grow cat grass without soil, then just use more rocks to fill your planter and layer a wet paper towel on top as a bed for the seeds.
Once you have your planter prepared you’ll need seeds. I purchased cat grass seeds on Amazon but you may be able to find them locally as well.
Take the seeds and sprinkle them over the top layer of soil. No need to bury them, they’ll grow right on top of the soil.
If growing without soil, just spread the seeds out evenly on top of the paper towel.
Give the seeds a healthy watering and in as little as 2 days you should start to see them sprout!
Cat Grass Planter Kits
Growing cat grass is super easy but If you want to simplify the set up process, then you can look into cat grass planter kits that come with everything you need.
There are a number of stylish options available. Shop cat grass planter kits now on Amazon

How Much Seed to Use in Your Planter
You want enough seed to cover the top layer of soil in your planter without the seeds overlapping. There’s no exact science because cat grass is so easy to grow, you can’t really mess it up.
However, the look of your plant will be affected depending on the amount of see you use. So, if you want a lush bed of grass, then go ahead and completely cover the top layer of soil with seed. If you want it a little more of a sparse look, then leave some soil showing between the seeds. Up to you!

Here’s how to grow cat grass indoors including the mix to use, the steps to take, how to maintain it and how long it takes.
I must admit, the pretty seed packet initially tempted me to buy the cat grass. My kitty Riley was acting a bit lonely (his buddy Oscar died 6 months ago) so I thought a little grass may be just the ticket to keep him entertained.
Riley has never shown any interest in any of my houseplants but I thought the cat grass might pique his curiosity. I never got around to planting the seeds until Sylvester entered the picture.
10 days before Christmas I decided it was time to get another kitty companion for Riley. Off to the shelter I marched carrier in hand. I ended up coming home with a big tuxedo boy, who for the most part has no interest in my plants.
That is, except for the Spider Plant which sits on a plant stand in the bedroom. Those big, crunchy leaves are just too irresistible!
I thought he’d be wildly enthusiastic about the grass and that I’d be planting it on a regular rotation. Both Sylvester and Riley sniffed the grass and that was the extent of the interaction.
So what did I do with the grass you ask? I cut it off and put it in my smoothies.
My neighbor says her kitty goes crazy for cat grass. Regardless of the fact that mine don’t, I want to share the details on how to grow it because your kitty will probably love it too.
I hadn’t grown cat grass for almost 20 years and forgot what a cinch it is to do.
Soil Mix for Cat Grass
A soilless mix is best for seed starting. It needs to be light and well-aerated so those tiny plants can easily emerge. If you like to DIY, here’s a recipe to make your own seed starting mix.
There are many seed starting mixes on the market which you can find online or at your local garden center.
I know a couple of people who start their seeds in organic potting soil and add in perlite to lighten the mix. Cat grass seeds are big (as you’ll see in the video) so I’m sure this option works just fine also.
Container to Use
I don’t think it matters what container you use. Just make sure it’s sturdy enough so your cat can’t easily tip it over. I used 4″ plastic grow pots but 6″ would work also. I’ve seen cat grass grown in trays, low bowls, rectangular planters, ceramics, terra cotta and more.

When to Sow the Seeds
Indoors, you can sow the seeds year round. I planted my 2 pots in late winter and they germinated and were ready for use in the specified time on the packet.
I live in Tucson with warmer, sunny winters so if you live in a climate where winter days are shorter, the process might take a bit longer at this time.
When the Cat Grass was Ready for Use
It was ready for kitty inspection (& consumption) in 10 days. So fast & easy!
How to Grow Cat Grass
Fill your container with the soil mix to 1/2″ to 1″ below the rim of the pot. I filled mine a bit higher than this, and when the large seeds starting emerging, they “puffed” the mix-up and a bit spilled out.
Moisten the mix.
Sprinkle the seeds on the surface. I sowed them densely and didn’t leave much space in between the seeds. This grass grows straight and narrow so they can be planted closely. I lightly pressed the seeds into the mix.
Cover with more of the mix.
Moisten the top. I used a mister for this part.
Put in a spot with bright natural light, preferably away from where your kitty can get it.
How to Maintain
I put the seeds in my northeast-facing dining room window. This location is very bright all day but receives no direct sun. Remember, I’m in the desert so yours might need a different exposure.
I misted the seeds every day until they started to germinate. After that, I watered the seeds every 2-3 days. You may have to water more or less depending on your conditions.
That’s all you do—easy as can be.
Some of you may a question or 2. Here I’m answering a few of the most commonly asked ones.
Can you grow cat grass outdoors? Yes, you can. The seeds can be sowed in Spring (once the evenings warm) in a pot or in the ground. What exactly is cat grass? I used a mix from Botanical Interests comprised of oat, wheat & barley. Most cat grass seeds sold are either wheat grass or oat grass. You can sow it year round indoors. How fast does cat grass grow? Fast! Mine was germinating in 3 days & ready to present to my kitties in 10 days. How many cat grass seeds to plant? Cat grass doesn’t need much width space so you can plant them close, practically touching. Just don’t plant them on top of each other. Will cat grass grow back? Yes. After I cut the grass back, I put it out in the garage & forgot about it. I looked at it a few days ago & it was sprouting up again. I’ve been watering the pot & the grass is up about 5″. Can cat grass grow underwater? I’ve never tried this method but have seen it done this way. You can find tutorials online. Are cat grass & catnip the same? No, they’re totally different & serve different purposes. Cats eat cat grass which provides them with vitamins & minerals & aids in their digestion. Catnip is a perennial herb (related to mint) & is more of an attractant. Cats rub on the leaves & stems which causes stimulation (ie, some go a bit nuts!). If they do eat it, it provokes sleepiness.
If you’re looking for cat grass seeds, be sure to check your local garden center or pet store. Here are a few online sources:
Botanical Interests. This is the mix I used.
Baker Creek. This 1 is interesting because it’s variegated.
Todd’s Seeds. This is a pound of wheatgrass for.
Cat grass is simple and inexpensive to grow. Keep it on rotation so your kitty has a steady supply. You’ll be hearing the purrs in no time!
